Growing up, I never once snuck out of the house. Not because I didn't want to, but because my parents had the presence of mind to raise my brother and me in the kind of home that would creakily broadcast our every movement to the far reaches of space. With no chance of escape, I'd gaze wistfully out the window, wishing I could quietly hop through it and run off into the Kula pastureland with dew between my toes and fog in my nose. If this fantasy had a soundtrack, it might sound a little like Shantala's "Sneakin' Out" (Ocean of Sound; 2009)—a tune as sweet and soft as an early summer night, but a touch kolohe, too. Back by popular demand, the Portland, Oregon collective (Benjy and Heather Wetheimer) returns to Maui for the third time to bring Studio-goers a night of song and sacred kirtan ("chanting in an energetic call-and-response repetition of Sanskrit mantras"). If you plan to attend, you'd do well to sneak in as early as 5:30pm for pre-show catering by Monsoon India and Coconut Bliss. 575-9390; studiomaui.com, www.shantalamusic.com
