OMG! That dude's walking on water?! With tenuous irony, SUP surfing is a second coming of sorts. The latest wave-rage in not only our waters, what's cool about the elegant sport of SUP is not only does it appeal to any demographic, but it's popularity is a nice chance to remind the rest of Earth that, yeah, we (i.e. Hawaii) invented this shit. Better recognize, yo! New craze though it may be, SUP's roots run deep. In the new documentary That First Glide—recently showcased at the 2011 Maui Film Festival—filmmaker Mike Waltze, a Maui resident and professional waterman, explores the sport's history and gathers SUP stories from today's greats. The likes of Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama, Robby Naish, Gerry Lopez, Brian Keaulana and Kai Lenny share their personal accounts of SUP, and Waltze traces the sport to the early Hawaiians and first Waikiki beach boys of the early 1900s. If you missed this flick at the festival—or are eager for a hana hou—next Friday's (July 22) screening at the MACC is your second chance. A portion of the proceeds benefits Maliko Water Sports. 242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org ■ |
