Remove Images Upfront News 2 West Maui Skate Park Finally Opens by Jen Russo May 03, 2012 After 12 years, plenty of blood, lots of sweat (cuz it's Lahaina) and too many tears, the West Maui Skate Park is now open to the public for skaters (county officials held their grand opening on a recent Wednesday morning–a dubious choice, given the fact that most kids were in school). At the blessing, Mayor Alan Arakawa emphasized being careful of the growing grass and other developing vegetation because the landscaping isn't pau and they don't want it damaged. But the county and parties involved were cool enough to understand that the public was more than ready to use the park, so they opened it without having completed the landscaping. So be careful! The park is a use-at-your-own-risk kind of place. Kids under 10 need parental supervision. The concrete park was designed by Gridline Skateparks, an industry leader that's already built more than 100 skateparks around the world. This Saturday, Donovan McNab, the owner of the Lahaina Skate Company, is organizing a Grand Opening with several sponsors–one that kids can attend without ditching school. The event starts at 4pm and will go till 9pm with food and drink, music, prizes and giveaways. Oh yeah, and lots of skateboarding.
