POLITICAL SCANDAL, Winner Ethics Complaints Against Councilmember Mike White Website: http://www.co.maui.hi.us/index.aspx?NID=586 Interesting choice! On the face of it, Councilmember Mike White has no trouble, as back in the spring the Maui County Board of Ethics dismissed a number of complaints filed against White, general manager of the Kaanapali Beach Hotel since 1985, for allegedly acting improperly by introducing and voting on a resolution advocating greater county funding for the Maui Visitors Bureau. There ethics board said there was no direct financial gain for White, and dumped the matter. And that’s pretty cut and dried, until you start thinking of the fact that the greater funding for the Visitors Bureau means greater numbers of tourists coming to Maui and staying in places like the Kaanapali Beach Hotel, which employs White. No, there’s no direct quid pro quo here, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a conflict.
We also know that you benefit directly from tourism dollars, making you a shill for the industry (Channel 7). Mike White is ethically challenged and the voters of Maui will remove him from office, seeing how the Ethics board is afraid to do their jobs.
