Upfront NewsJuly 25, 2012 | 09:24 AMby Jen RussoAs founder Joyce Kawakami humbly describes her Feed My Sheep operation, she almost downplays the significance of her idea back in 1999 to start distributing food out of the trunk of her car to hungry folks. Feed My Sheep is different than some of the kitchens and church pantries in that they distribute bags of food to the needy in five different locations throughout the island every week, and once a month in Hana. They pass out bags of food that are packaged to last about a week, and Kawakami says they currently serve about 1,500 people every week. |

There are a couple county hearings from earlier this week that you should know about. On Monday, July 23, the County Council General Plan Committee met at 9am to discuss the West Maui section of the Maui Island Plan Growth maps (which, oddly enough, don't include the 1,500-plus homes slated to go into Olowalu). Considering that most of you probably worked at that time, it's unlikely many of you actually made it. Ditto the Tuesday, July 24 Maui Planning Commission hearing (also at 9am, natch) on the long-awaited Honualua project.

Upfront News 3July 25, 2012 | 09:25 AMby Jen RussoAre you an adult who still doesn't know how to swim? Even here on Maui, which is surrounded by a vast ocean, adults who lack an ability to swim aren't as rare as you might think. According to a Red Cross survey published last year, one in five people aren't strong swimmers, yet most summer activities are planned around the water. Maui swim coach Janet Renner says this can be quite an embarrassment at best, while the Red Cross says it can be a drowning hazard at worst. |

Of the world's seven billion people, an estimated 2.6 billion do not have toilet access, and every day a reported 4,000 children die from sanitation-related illnesses. But in May, in Portland, Ore., Douglas Eki and "Jason" Doctolero were awarded $332,000 for wrongful firing because they complained about being inconvenienced at work by not having an easily available toilet. Menzies Aviation had arranged for the men to use facilities at nearby businesses at their Portland International Airport site, but the men said they felt unwelcome at those places and continued to complain (and use buckets). |

“A shell crashed ashore. In the dun-colored houses along Kahului’s waterfront, stevedores and their women heard the gun again, like a door slamming, and again the crash of the shell. The Jap fired ten rounds in all. Then the submarine disappeared in the night. Announcing this attack on an undefended, unimportant cane-&-pineapple port, the U.S. Navy reported: no casualties, negligible damage.”
