Bravo, Barry and MTW!
March 11, 2010 | 10:37 PM

I really enjoyed reading about Maui's film history! I'm a long-time resident and I had been unaware of some of the instances mentioned.

Bravo to Barry Wurst for enlightening us and the Maui Time Weekly for recognizing Barry's talent!

Good article ruined by crap editing and wrong facts.
March 11, 2010 | 08:47 PM

Who the hell did the layout of the article? It would've been better to have one photograph of each movie rather than have a whole jumbled mess of images from 3 films scattered about like children's toys.

And whoever did research on this article needs to be fired. Theirs few of them thar mistakes!!

* Papillon was never filmed in Hana, let alone Hawaii. Spain and Jamaica were the locations. NO HAWAII SHOTS.

* Jurassic Park only filmed a part of the Maui Coast near Hana, namely the Helicopter scene where Hammond announces they've arrived and it cuts to a shot of the helicopter approaching the coast of Isla Nubar. Blue Hawaiian Helicopters made this point an integral part of one of it's commercials years ago when they had that Pilot Profile commercial.

Of course, I doubt Maui Time will ever print a correction or apology to rectify the glaring factoid problems in the article.

Piilani Death Race
March 11, 2010 | 05:34 PM

Piilani is The most dangerous stretch of roadway on the island. People crash & burn there far more often than gets reported. Largely from people speeding through intersections & heavy congested traffic trying to pass because "left lane is passisng lane". But In certain areas the left lane lets you get to the left turn lane. This puts you in the path of the oncoming often speeding passing lane traffic. Then as if to matters worse you have traffic pulling out from the side roads in seceral places where no traffic control devices are. They pull out into the center & stop. As crowded as the roadway is even a 30 mhp speed zone does no good.

A smart man once said the way to fix the south maui traffic problem is to make Piilani Highway a One Way North Bound road & S kihei Rd One Way south bound. Think about it.

How many more people will die before something is done.

& you continue to disregard posted speed limits & treat the left lane like that of a MAINLAND highway.

I can't drive 55!
March 11, 2010 | 11:47 AM

What about the roads on the Big Island? You'll be driving along at 50, then all of a sudden a sign says 35, so you slow down and then once past the sign, there's another sign back up to 50! You really can't even see a reason why the speed had to slow down! And it goes on like that forever! I think it's the Police radar traps to catch anyone, local or tourist, whose speed might vary from their posted signs! Must be the only way they can raise enough money to keep their jobs. I like to set the cruise control on and go, not speed up, hit the brakes, speed up, hit the brakes, etc., what kind of gas mileage do you think we get doing that?

Planning is smart
March 10, 2010 | 05:39 AM

Planning ahead and not playing catch up Is smart. Everyone who's successful knows this. Why would this be any different? Look anywhere in the US at places that have planned for growth and places that haven't. The differences are obvious. Planning is simply ensuring you don't repeat the mistakes of the past. It's not stifling development, just getting consensus ahead of time. That should actually help developers to know what's expected ahead of time. How could anyone argue against that?

...or not. Kinda hard to "read" anything when it isn't up and working. I have a lot of family and friends back on the mainland that were using the MauiTime twitter feed as their main source of news from that day because the coverage here was SO bad.

just a smarter thought
