Adding to Maui Thing’s worthiness in this category is that it signifies a shift in consciousness on-island—a move toward localism, sustainability and community-mindedness. Most of the items sold here are locally created screen prints featuring a whole slew of funky designs for dudes, ladies and even the young’ns. Some sport an oversized peace sign, others the telltale cephalopod and many, of course, feature the brand’s super positive slogan, “Stuck on Good.” Their Wailuku shop is usually hopping on First Fridays, when they feature the likes of the Vince Esquire Band and the Throwdowns. 7 N. It’s been a long time coming for Mauians to have our island’s moniker printed on threads in an entirely unpretentious, not-cheesy way. From either their Market St. shop or online, you can outfit the whole ‘ohana in clothes that look as good as they feel. But more than being the hippest of no ka oi clothiers, they embrace localism to the fullest and do tons of creative work in the community, especially with keiki. “It’s a movement,” they say. “It’s about growth and change. We believe that good ideas and good design have the power to inspire, to stimulate, to make good things happen.” A thing of beauty.

I’ve said it before, but I would much rather be in fashion, than in love. If you’re like-minded, Maui Thing is greater than cupid and much better dressed. Simple and stylish, Maui Thing exemplifies the “summer is a state of mind” mentality. The shop regularly supports community events, spotlights local artists, and incorporates local themes into the clothing. For example, did you notice the octopus logo is loosely in the shape of Maui Island? Clever, right? 7 N. Market St., Wailuku; 808-249-0215
