A&B LIKES BUSES

After a mere week out of the top slot, A&B rockets back to the top on news that it donated a bunch of land to Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) so they can build a big bus terminal in Pu`unene. On the mainland, an organization like MEO might just go to a county or city council for land. But out here, things are a bit different. Of the 10 acres MEO needs for the site—which will hopefully house a passenger terminal, bus storage lot, workshop, fueling station and offices—A&B sold five acres to MEO at a “deep discount,” according to the Dec. 17 Maui News and gave them the other five acres free of charge. “[W]e recognized the importance of this location to MEO, and the importance of MEO to this community,” A&B Chairman and CEO Allen Doane said in The Maui News piece.

TIGER SKIPS OUT, AGAIN

For the third year in a row, Tiger Woods—as close to a legend in professional golf as you can get and still be living—has decided to pass on the Mercedes-Benz Championship, held each January in ML&P’s famously luxurious Kapalua Resort. Still, Woods tried to strike a conciliatory tone. “Kapalua does a fantastic job,” Woods said in a Dec. 17 Pacific Business News web post. “I just enjoy the time at home with my family.” How sweet. Guess which tourney the Buick-sponsored golfer will be attending first in 2008? Yup: the Buick Invitational in San Diego. Perhaps Kapalua’s problem is simply a matter of automobile selection… MTW
