Pour Some Sugar on Me

Tuesday (Jan. 1) Kick off 3:30 p.m. at the Kahului Ale House, Kahului

[SPORTS] It’s more than a sports event. To the people of Hawai‘i, this is history. Screw the Superferry and drown the whales, THE WARRIORS ARE GOING TO THE SUGAR BOWL! Can you believe it? If you’re anything like me, it still seems like I’m gonna wake up and it will all be one big dream. I was thinking that it should be some sort of holiday or something, but it’s already New Year’s day so whatever. The point is that after years and years of us Hawai‘i folk making football pools on mainland teams we finally get to bet on our own boys, which is so awesome I can barely stand it. If you want to watch it in a festive, testosterone filled environment like I do, head to the Kahului Ale House which will have the game playing on all 30 of their televisions. Coors Lite, Bud Light and Bud will all be selling for three bucks a pint. Oh, and in case you didn’t already know (but like it really matters) the Warriors are up against the Georgia Bulldogs and will be playing at the Louisiana Superdome which is going to sell out at 72,000 seats. Winter’s a Drag

[SHOW] Feeling a little chilly? Why not warm up with a hot drag show? The New Cosmetix from Oahu will be back on Maui for a special holiday show called Winter Wonder Drag complete with cookie baking and holiday tunes. I was given the “tsk, tsk” by the lovely Chacha over the phone today when I sheepishly admitted that I had never seen their show. They’ve been coming to Maui for 20 years… So, I’ll probably be there along with MiMi, Leikia, Justice and, of course, Chacha.  Doors open at 9 p.m. No cover charge. Yuuga na Nihon ga Cho

[ART] There was really no English (Eigo) phrase to describe artist Hisashi Otsuka, so I went with the native tongue. Loosely translated it means something like “elegant traditional Japanese art.” Otsuka’s kind of like a samurai , wielding a paintbrush instead of a sword. He has remarkable dedication to his work and is skilled in both Zen and the martial arts. The discipline that he embodies is evident in his artistic endeavors. His work has a very traditional, impeccable, old school feel while also being very modern in its tone. How is this possible? I have no idea, but trust me it’s true. Boogie Night

[DANCE] Sure, slobbing around with a bunch of drunks lighting firecrackers in some guy’s garage can be a fun way to bring in the New Year. But c’mon! Been there, done that. This year try something new like the New Years dance hosted by the Aloha Ballroom Dance Academy and co-founder Rita O’Conner. This is an adults-only, non-alcoholic event. [FILM] I can’t be the only one entranced by the gypsies. Scarves, silver, fortunes, caravans, hot dark mysterious men that travel around selling whimsical potions… What’s not to love? And then there’s the music! Gypsies have very cool music. Did you know that there are different types of gypsies who play different types of music? Gypsy Caravan, a documentary by legendary cinematographer Albert Maysles, follows five gypsy bands and is shot in Spain, India, Macedonia and Romania. I knew all that just by reading your palm.
