Horhito’s Mexican Cantina (Chicken Avocado Soup)

This chicken soup made me realize that—even beyond Campbell’s—indeed, soup is good food. Not your boring standby chicken noodle in a can, Horhito’s Chicken Avo soup will make you long for the Mexican grandmother you never had, to tend to you when you’re feeling under the weather. It sounds simple enough: a flavorful house broth with boneless, skinless, shredded chicken breast, half an avocado and sliced scallions. But it’s so good, you might want to pretend you’ve got a cold just so a friend will take pity on you and bring you some. Not that I would ever do that—I’m just saying… 41 E. Lipoa St., Kihei, 891-6394.

$6.50

Yorman’s by the Sea (Vegetarian Gumbo)

It’s got all your standard vegetables—plus okra!—and it’s served with rice. That’s the way all true gumbo from the South should be served. Oh, and it comes with a couple thick slices of cornbread. It’s thick and rich and loaded with spicy goodness. Located in the Menhune Shores Condominium complex, 760 S. Kihei Road, Kihei, 874-8385.
