Chatting with the Editor

by By the Editor

April 28, 2005

As the editor of Maui Time Weekly, people come up to me all the time and ask all sorts of questions about the paper. So each week, I’ll sit down and chat with a different member of the Maui Time ‘ohana. This week, I spoke with contributing writer George Thrustgood.

Editor: Hey George. Thanks a lot for talking with me.

Thrustgood: No problem, boss. It’s my pleasure.

Editor: Now I forget—how long have you been writing for the paper?

Thrustgood: About 20 months, not that I’m keeping count.

Editor: That long, huh? You know, I’ve been at the paper about that long myself. Time certainly flies when you’re having fun.

Thrustgood: And how. But working for an editor like you really makes it go easier.

Editor: Oh, please. Tell my why you got into journalism.

Thrustgood: Damn, I knew you were going to ask me that. Wow. I guess I just feel that getting a real job where I’d have to work and wear a tie and be on time is just too horrifying to contemplate.

Editor: That is so weird! You know, I’m glad we finally sat down and talked because what you’re saying is exactly how I feel. I mean it’s uncanny.

Thrustgood: And that surprises you?

Editor: Shouldn’t it?

Thrustgood: Well, I mean, of course what I feel is the same as what you feel. You and I are the same person.

Editor: What did you say?

Thrustgood: You mean, all this time—you didn’t know? Oh wow, this is awkward.

Editor: I’ll say. How do you think Payroll feels?

[Both laugh uproariously]

Thrustgood: Yeah. But seriously, how could you not know? I mean, everyone in the office knows that I’m just a pen name you use for humor pieces and such. It’s the worst kept secret around here. Ask anyone.

Editor: I’m sorry, but I’m just not buying it. It’s absolutely impossible for you and I to be the same person.

Thrustgood: Look, try to be open-minded about this. Oh hey, Pignataro just walked in. Hey Anthony, come here a sec!

Pignataro: What do you want?

Editor: Well, I was just talking with George here, and he seems to think that he and I are, well, the same person.

Pignataro: That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard.

Editor: See! I told you!

Thrustgood: I can’t believe you don’t know either.

Pignataro: Know what? That you’re nuts?

Thrustgood: Actually, I’m serious. The Editor and I are the same person.

Pignataro: Riiight. Next you’ll be telling me that I’m you guys or you two are also me, or something like that.
