RANK PREVIOUS COMPANY

1 Maui Land & Pineapple

5 Hawaiian Telcom

4 Monsanto Hawai’i

6 Alexander & Baldwin

3 Trex Enterprises

9 Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation

2 Dowling Co.

10 Maui Electric Co.

7 Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co.

8 Makena Resort

Hawaiian Telcom is rising because they’re still running tons of TV commercials and all those giant full-color ads in local papers. That kind of publicity isn’t cheap to anyone but its parent owner Carlyle Group. And Makena Resort is falling because all that legal squabbling in Honolulu over who actually owns Seibu’s properties in Hawai’i won’t help get their big resort built. Fights like that could even slow developer Everett Dowling’s plan to build super condos for the super rich on his 11 Makena acres. And there’s more bad news for HC&S: not only did The Maui News receive more than 9,000 responses to its recent phone poll on continuing cane burning (the vast majority said it should be “banned immediately”) but the Nov. 25, 2005 News had a letter from Maui County Environmental Coordinator Rob Parsons saying, “The days are numbered for the economics of sugar production in Hawai’i.” Ouch!
