Issue 9.45: Cunning Lingle
What Governor Linda Lingle said in an Apr. 26, 2006 Honolulu Star-Bulletin story about a potential influenza pandemic in Hawai’i:
by By Anthony Pignataro
May 04, 2006
“It is important for people to understand what they can do, what they should be doing.”
What she didn’t say:
Leaving aside the fact that Lingle’s quote could be used for nearly any emergency or even non-emergency situation, it’s difficult to say what exactly she means here. An influenza pandemic means that millions of people everywhere contract a deadly disease and die. There’s not much any of us can or will do, since the very fact that there’s a pandemic means federal and state officials failed to distribute an effective influenza vaccine in time. Though the same Star-Bulletin article that includes Lingle’s statement has such helpful tips as not going out or kissing people during the pandemic, to cut down on germ transmission and so forth.
