The Secret to The Secret
Talking with Dr. John Demartini

by By Krista Sherer

November 09, 2006

When was the last time you sat down and really thought about what

you were grateful for? We all have much to appreciate; yet most of us

focus on what we lack. Knowing that I have a tendency to be one of

these people, I try to stay open to informative materials that remind

me to be positive. And not so long ago, a friend told me that I really

needed to watch The Secret.

Being the jaded girl that I am, I first attempted to avoid this

movie, which came out earlier this year. But later I gave in and

watched it. The film is what some of my friends have called “the Hooked on Phonics

for the spiritually aware.” It’s a collection of philosophers,

teachers, writers and quantum physicists who all speak on the “Law of

Attraction”—the idea that what we draw into our lives is what we

continually think about. If we clearly ask, believe and stay open to

receive what we want, then the world will give us exactly what we

desire.

“Whatever we think about and thank about,” philosopher and

inspirational speaker Dr. John Demartini says in the movie, “we bring

about.”

Being a modern day philosopher and inspirational speaker, Demartini

travels 300 days a year throughout more than 50 nations. He’s the

author of nearly 40 books dealing with subjects ranging from business

development to children’s personal development to chiropractic

philosophy. He speaks and writes about personal transformation through

the power of gratitude and unconditional love.

Hearing that he was coming to Maui to do some workshops I decided to

speak with him to get a deeper look into this interesting man. Calling

his hotel in Sydney, I introduced myself and asked him to briefly

explain the two-hour “Relationship Myths, Mirrors and Magic” workshop

he was planning to do on Nov. 16 at the Renaissance Wailea Beach

Resort. He said that he would explain the common myths of

relationships.

“For example, no one really betrays you,” he said. “You often

project your values onto them and expect them to live by your values

instead of honoring that person for living by their own set of values.

And then you feel betrayed because of the fantasy that you projected.”

He added that he would help people set realistic expectations and

teach them how to communicate their values. He then went into “The

Breakthrough Experience,” another two-day workshop that he’ll conduct

on Nov. 18 and 19, saying it will help “dissolve stress and how to see

the hidden order in daily chaos.”

He said his method would help people be more “poised than poisoned,”

allowing them to be appreciative of the things around them. This, he

said, would let a person “have more love in life.”

Demartini told me he was born on Thanksgiving Day which he said

definitely had an affect on him, most notably because his mother always

told him to count his blessings. When he was 17 and living on Oahu’s

North Shore, he nearly died of strychnine poisoning after eating the

wood rose plant. This was apparently pretty common for surfer hippies

to ingest back in the 1970s.

After being found in his tent and nursed back to life, Demartini

said he was intuitively led to the inspirational speaker Paul Bragg,

who helped him find his passion in life. Now Demartini says he wakes up

every day and goes to sleep every night naming the things in his life

that he is grateful for.

“I usually do this until I have a tear in my eye of thanks,” he told

me. “I’m sure you have had a moment where you were so grateful you had

a tear in your eye.”
