Board of Variances and Appeals

Thurs., Apr. 26, 1:30 p.m.

Tony Roma’s aroma better not attract too many customers because the

new Lahaina restaurant wants permission to provide just half the

required parking stalls (10 instead of 20) at the Old Kishi Building on

Front Street.

Maui County Council

Fri., Apr. 27, 9 a.m.

My budget for next year is so not even in the works but the County

of Maui’s Fiscal Year 2008 is totally planned… or at least really

close. See for yourself: they’re already discussing details like the

proposed raises of Deputies Corporation Counsel and Deputies

Prosecuting Attorney ($6,350 and $7,650, respectively). Then they’ll

propose a bill increasing rates at the Waiehu Municipal Golf Course.

And since the county seems to be having some pension issues—much like

Corporate America—there’s a proposal to establish a “post-employment

obligations fund” for the retired employees of the Employee’s

Retirement System of the State of Hawai`i and the Hawai`i

Employer-Union Health Benefit Trust Fund. That should keep the retirees

happy. And we all know what unhappy retirees do when election-time

rolls around...
