At a recent benefit performance, the condescending disdain with which the kumu hula treated the halau shocked me. Not only was it unprofessional, but as a representation of our island’s culture, it was downright embarrassing. Ho‘okana‘oi! To the dancers, thank you so much for the taking so much time and effort to learn and present our culture. It couldn’t have been easy. Hopefully, your kumu hula will see past his cloud of mirrors and realize how lucky he is to have you. It takes more than knowledge and talent to make an owl wise.
