has a career spanning five decades which has evolved nearly as often as pants styles. From his beginnings as a young trumpet-playing son of a high profile political leader struggling to end racial segregation in South Africa, he picked up influences from church music, political protest songs and the streets. During his 30-year self-imposed exile in the U.S. and abroad, he recorded the hit song “
Grazing in the Grass
” and coined a unique flugelhorn style that’s held its own in jazz, funk, rock and pop music. With mentors like

looking over his shoulder, Masekela has become one of the most important names in world music by recording songs that reflect his people’s struggle and suffering.

came to Maui, my then-boyfriend wanted us to go. I was really stoked and envisioned a night of funky sounds, beer and post-teenage-angst-filled make-out sessions in his truck after the show. None of this happened. Well, at least for me. I got dumped before the show, but I’m pretty sure that he went anyway. Bastard. Anywho, WAR is back and this time I plan on enjoying

is two guys who’ve been rocking out together since they feathered their hair during their high school days about 50 years ago.
Jorma Kaukonen
’s finger-picking guitar style and
Jack Casady
’s electric bass rhythms carried over when they formed their own group of talented musicians named Hot Tuna–named when a fan shouted out “Hot [expletive deleted] tuna!” in response to the line “What’s that smell like fish?” Over the years, more rock, jazz and bluegrass influences have weaved into this classic band’s repertoire and kept them hitting the road to perform great shows like this one.
