The Music of Fireworks

Friday (July 4) Concert begins at 6 p.m. fireworks begin at 8 .m. library lawn on Front St. at Lahaina Harbor, Lahaina.

[EVENT] The Fourth of July is a holiday where you can really lay waste to your eardrums, but then again the celebration of Independence is probably worth it. This year, the Lahaina Town Concert in the park will help you get in the groove (and warm-up your auditory system,) even before the keiki start arming themselves with explosives. At 8:00, you can share the joy and amazement of watching fireworks with your family. For all you neurotics out there, the fear of renegade shrapnel hitting you should begin at about 8:05. Free. Rodeo and Parade

Thursday-Sunday (July 3 – 6) times vary, Oskie Rice Arena & Field, Olinda Road, Makawao.

[EVENT] It would be hard to describe the awesomeness of the Makawao rodeo within the confines of this blurb. However, Interim Editor Starr Begley wants me to be sure to mention the 43rd Annual Paniolo Parade, beginning at 9 a.m. in Makawao on Baldwin Avenue. This year’s theme is “The Great Waiomina—Honoring all of our Paniolo.” For all you greenhorns, “paniolo” means “cowboy.” The Makawao Rodeo offers exciting events such as the free admission qualifying runs on Thursday and Friday, the Bull Bash on Friday and the Rodeo on Saturday and Sunday. [EVENT] 808 Connects and HI Team Sports is putting on 2008 All Elements Maui! What is it exactly? Hold on while I check the press release… Well, looky here, it say that there’s going to be a Hip Hop gathering after the ultimate freestyle competition! And MC Goldawn Child! Graffiti artists and turntables?! Aww yeah. What? A skate board event at 11 a.m.? It’s all about real hip hop and bringing a free, all ages event to the community. Halau I Ka Wekiu

Saturday (July 5) 7pm, Castle Theater, MACC

[HULA] Literally the Hawaiian word halau means “a branch from which many leaves grow.” Today, the word “halau” usually refers to a hula school. “Wekiu” means “of the highest rank.” In The TENder Years, Kumu (teachers) Hula Karl Veto Baker and Michael Casupang, highlight their decade long journey together and the creation of Halau I Ka Wekiu. This performance is a celebration of their halau’s 10th anniversary and will feature songs from KUmZ’s new CD “KUmZ – Listen to Your Heart.” Not only will the audience be stunned by the halau’s breathtaking performance, but they will also be able to share in personal tales told by the kumu. The Blues

Saturday (July 5) 7 – 10 p.m. at the Iao Theater, Wailuku

[MUSIC] The 2008 Maui Invitational Band Festival is here and they’re planning a whole evening dedicated to the Blues. There will be a fantastic bunch of local and national musicians performing like Sheryl Renee, Michael Hill, Colin John, Claude Hopper and the Vince Esquire Blues Band. Suggested donation: $10.
