Sardonic, self-deprecating, drolly divine, David Sedaris—considered by many (myself included) to be one of the preeminent humorists writing today—completes his whirlwind lecture tour in Hawaii. And we should consider ourselves damned lucky to have the chance to see him! Luckier still, we scooped the Maui exclusive interview with him, conducted by phone from his Paris apartment (look for the story in next week’s edition). Sedaris got his start on National Public Radio thanks to Ira Glass, and says of the stardom that followed, “My life changed completely, like someone waved a magic wand.” Since—and amidst—his NPR success, he’s authored Barrel Fever, Holidays on Ice, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim and most recently, When You Are Engulfed in Flames. Each title has become a bestseller—collectively topping 7 million copies sold worldwide, translated into 25 languages. Sedaris family fans already know his sister Amy is the star of Strangers with Candy (donning a fat suit to play Jerri Blank, alongside a certain Stephen Colbert as Chuck Noblet), but may not know that the siblings collaborate as “The Talent Family” (they are, indeed, talented) and together have authored six plays. Read all his work and ready for more? Keep with this week’s Halloween theme with a selection from his recommended reading list: The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead by Max Brooks. 242-7469, www.mauiarts.org
