Surreality Bites
Thursday-Saturday April 15-17
How can you not love an event with a call to action that includes “dead-on dolphin impressions”? OK, this new
talent show, “Sideshow”
(the first night of what will be monthly engagements, every third Thursday at Casanova, 9-11:30pm, $10 cover, free for performers), isn’t looking specifically for porpoise impersonations, but
is
searching for those to ready to unveil their hidden talents. (Event co-creator
Jill Pridemore
emphasizes that “originality is as much a factor as performance.”)
Akaku Community Television
will later broadcast the competitors vying for prizes and bragging rights. But unlike Idol, you’ll have to be there to vote via text message. For more information or to register in advance, e-mail sideshowtalentshow@gmail.com. On the West side, check out
Russian Surrealist Victor Bredega
. Every Friday night in April (7-10pm), Bredega will be on hand to discuss his unique work at
Sargent’s Fine Art
on Front Street—the only gallery in the nation with the privilege of showcasing Bredega’s trippy, oil-on-canvas creations. Disco had already died when the
Hyatt Regency Maui
was born in 1980, but their famed nightclub
Spats
was as the closest thing Maui had to a discotheque. Though now defunked (sorry), fans of the club get their due flashback, as Spats—for one night only on Saturday—will re-open in celebration of the Hyatt’s
30th anniversary
. Spinning at this ’80s/disco-themed event is none other than
DJ Blast
, a regular back in the day. Emulate the Hyatt’s lobby-living penguins by wearing black and white (theme colors of the night), and do the hustle with
Spats Passion Dancers
,
Cirque Polynesia performers
,
ABSOLUT models
and
Bud Ambassadors
. A portion of the door ($25 or $20 in advance) will benefit the Visitor Industry Charity Walk.
