Pick Paia, Not Your Nose
Saturday (April 17), all day, all over town
Screw the vernal equinox. You really know spring is upon you when events slated are so thick, Picks must take on an entire town. In this case,
Paia
—a mecca for yoga, health food, bare feet, acoustic guitars and Brazilian bikinis. Since so many environmentally conscious people hang around Paia town all day anyway, it’s easy logic for folks to come together and wield their collective activist might. The
Hawaiian Heritage Environmental Sustainability Fair
(12pm-sunset) provides venue for just that, on the grounds of the Paia Gardens. Highlights include a giant solar dehydrator and electric motorcycle with a solar charger on display, as well as event coordinator
Anthony Simmons
’s band,
The Eazy
, performing in the afternoon. You can also learn about red worm composting (if that’s your kind of thing). Among the organizations giving presentations and hosting informational and interactive booths are
Upcountry Sustainability, Onipa‘a Sustainability and Compassion Center, Pacific Power Sails, Ko‘ie Fishpond
and
SLIM
. Also taking over the town this Saturday is
The Butterfly Effect
. This non-competitive “worldwide water woman movement,” celebrates its fourth year of festivities on Maui and aims to foster camaraderie among
wai-loving wahine
with a down-winder journey (windsurf, kite board or paddle) from Ho‘okipa to Kanaha (11am launch, 2pm land). Check-in takes place at the Green Banana Cafe (8:30am), followed by cooler-than-the-Olympics closing ceremonies at Cafe Mambo (6:30pm), and capped off with the official after party at Cafe Moana (9pm, $10 cover), featuring
DJ Pio
and
DJ Nadi
.
