Hula Grill Helps Out Hilo Senior

by Jen Russo

November 24, 2011

This will be the ninth year that the bartenders at Hula Grill will hui up their tip jar for charity. This year the funds go to 70-year-old Mary Davy of Hilo, who was recently the victim of a violent attack and burglary in her home.

“Mary’s daughter, Suzanne, is a good friend of many of our employees and when we found out what had happened to her mother, we really wanted to do everything we could to help,” said Bar Manager Lisa Olmos. “The holidays are all about sharing the aloha spirit and we encourage our guests to join us in our effort to support Ms. Davy.”

Davy was asleep when an 18-year-old suspect entered her house, brutally attacking her and burglarizing her home. She suffered numerous stab wounds to her upper body as well as severe bruising and lacerations on her head, face and neck. Davy was hospitalized in critical condition and is now recovering.

The suspect was arrested for burglary in the first degree and attempted murder in the second degree.

Seanna Clark, Marketing Manager for Hula Grill, says the participating bartenders will be Olmos, Dave Fried, Josh Roberts, Keahi Lua, Reed Robertson, Tara Fontaine, William Morris, Gail Falkenbury, Josh Gruber, Karl Furutani, Melinda Rochon, Mikey Baldridge, Mike Woo, Ross Stidel, Ryan Fisher and Kalei Fisher. The bartenders at Hula Grill came up with the concept eight years ago when one of them got into a nasty car accident. They pooled their tips on Black Friday and helped him out.
