What is the cause?

When it comes to reppping red or blue (kids did that in my highschool... Are they still at it?) or Westside vs. Central or whatever why do you folks think people do it? On an island this small, why do people fight over even smaller locations? Is it part of what has become the "local" culture? Any insights?
