Mahalo nui loa
November 19, 2010 | 06:40 PM Gratitude to the hard-working folk who stay up late into the night eradicating and preventing coqui infestation on our tiny island. I have stayed with friends in Kurtistown and Kapoho on the Big Island and it's true - talking on the phone is really hard - the person on the other end could barely hear my voice over the coqui whistles in the background. As for sleeping - NOT easy. And it seems like it doesn't take long for the coqui to change its habits in the Hawaiian environment - over there they don't stop whistling until at least 10 AM and they start up again by 3:30-4 in the afternoon, earlier if it's a cloudy/dark day. I am thankful that MISC and Maui County saw this as the serious threat it is and acted before it was too late. I prefer crickets and dreams. Summer06VertCrewVet |
