Souki's Folly
March 25, 2011 | 01:07 PM

House Bill 1239 (Senate Bill SD1), would require that the State buy and operate a “High Speed Ferry Vessel”. It has passed the House (pushed by Rep Souki) and has almost passed the Senate.

Using figures from the original Superferry operation, it will cost taxpayers approximately $4million per year of subsidies.

The bill FORCES the State to try and buy the Superferry or, if that is not possible, a nearly identical vessel.

Seems kinds crazy since it would be better to learn by the dismal Superferry experience and choose a more economical and viable ferry that would actually WORK and not get cracked hulls from our gnarly channels.

At the end, the Superferry was being escorted on its way by the Coast Guard because they didn't trust its seaworthiness.
