I have a problem with the article “The Obama Doctrine”. I feel it should have been labeled an opinion piece. The author makes statements that I was able to disprove in a mere 5 minutes. This leads me to believe he either did no research, or severely edited the full story. For instance the statement “Manning as been subjected to torture including sleep deprivation and forced nudity – treatment ordered by Obama.” The accusation of sleep deprivation is an exaggeration of a common practice of prisoners on a wellness or suicide watch, which Manning was on. He was not allowed to sleep between the hours of 5 am (7am on weekends) and 8 pm. This hardly counts as sleep deprivation. He had harsher treatment in basic training. Second, the forced nudity is another common practice in place to inspect that no physical harm has come to the prisoner. Now I agree he has not been convicted as of yet. So all of these measures seem harsh. But we must remember what he is charged with. Whistle blower or not his suspected crimes are serious and he is being treated as such. Last but not least I was to see the document or proof that Obama personally ordered that Manning be tortured. If you are going to print it prove it. The other issue I have with this article is the summary of the piece. We hear about how we have no proof that Bin Laden was responsible for the 9/11 attacks. It harks back the “we bombed ourselves so we could steal the oil from Iraq” argument. We didn’t kill Saddam Hussein, we left that for the people we put n charge to do. He had a trail and was convicted. No one cried when his neck snapped, not here any way. So the argument that if bush had done it a big uproar would have happened is silly to me. As someone who marched on Washington in protest of an illegal occupation as I saw it I can say that most people I knew and know were relieved when he could no longer hurt anyone. Fast forward to now. From what I understand it may not seem like the best option, but what Obama did was fully legal. Osama Bin Laden killed and tortured thousands more of his own people than he did ours. He is responsible for some of the darkest years in the regions history. As far as I am concerned the world is a better place. But I digress. You published an article that has so many gaps and flat out biased lies that I felt it necessary as an informed educated, American, who has no problem questioning my government, to correct you. I’m guessing your editor didn’t actually read it before putting it on the front page. Sincerely, Severely Disappointed You call this journalism? Makawao |
