I'll second the first comment above. Even as a recent transplant from Seattle, I could feel my heart beating a little faster and harder in my chest, along with a little indignation rising on behalf of the indigenous families. There are clearly no easy solutions to this mess, and sadly money trumps tradition in our world, but it made me proud to be a new part of a community that would at least 1) stand up for pono, and 2) do it in a peaceful way.

Thank you for your VERY well-written piece, in particular the last two sentences as they pertain to those like the NYC couple and myself. For outsiders who have a true desire to honor and experience Hawaiian history and culture, it's a shame they'd have to risk arrest to do so.

Even more shameful is that a native son would be running that same risk.
