Start With Home Energy Audits
August 29, 2008 | 07:49 AM

Home renovations is a project. Energy conservation is a project. Any project should start with a plan.

For home energy conservation, the plan is created from a home energy audit. We had one done on our home last fall. It gave us specifics in the areas in our home where we were inefficiently and not ineffeciently consuming energy. This let us know those areas where we should focus our attention and our money.

Even with the current level of rebates, solar PV is still out of reach for most home owners. IMO, Solar water heaters are much more economically viable. The traditional caulking around window frames, timers on bathroom fans, and so on have been around for years but are not as sexy.

However, start with the home energy audit. If you have not have had one done ask the firm (or local utility who may provide it for free) to see a copy of an actual report that you would receive at the end for you to tell if it is worth the money. We paid around $350.

Yes, we have written many articles on our home web site on the different portions of the report we received from our home energy audit (ours was called ECOENERGY).
