Cane Burning + Vog = fewer healthy residents & less returning to
July 03, 2009 | 02:54 AM

I don't see how blaming vog justifies the continuing of cane burning...It should be all the more reason to stop it! We are having "new" problems with our air quality due to vog and cane burning only worsens it, being the main cause of our poor air quality to begin with, along with that lovely grey Hawaiian snow.
In talking about our economy, cane burning is hurting Maui in terms of its residents making money from one of our biggest resources, tourism. When tourists come here and smell the sulfur of the after burn, not to mention the smoke, there are other islands for them to spend their money on...and they may go check them out after driving through a wall of smoke & dust in their convertible. I know tourists can be an irritant, but they are part of the economy of Hawaii, therefore a part of the livelihood of the people who live here, who are our greatest asset, our Maui residents. Malama Aina!
