August 03, 2009 | 01:57 PM I've visited the Maui Fiends of the Library used bookstore a few times, and I noticed their solicitation for volunteer help. So I gave my name and number to the clerk at the counter. They never called me back. I have since heard the same news from other persons. Though they say they want more help, they seem to be satisfied with the little help they have. They only want a certain type of person, somebody who fits their mold. These are all white people; no persons of color, though we certainly have many such persons on Maui. I know other persons of color who have offered their volunteer services, but they don't get called back, either. I guess small non-corporate entities are often places where over-controlling mini-tyrants run things their own way, and try to keep other people out---other people who are more open, who will offer fresh ideas, who will make the organization more democratic rather than demogogic, and who might even convince these rednecks to hold their monthly meetings at a time and place where people who have a day-job can also attend and offer input. usalies@yahoo.com |
