The industries you mention as successors to hospitality are all in the same concept as hospitality: consumer spending. Maui should focus its efforts on a knowledge-based industry, such as Research & Development. You don't need to have end products that will be purchased by consumers; what you want are ideas that can be purchased by conglomerates that will pay you royalties and licensing fees.

Given the remote location of Hawaii, I am surprised the state government does not encourage more of this.
